North Carolina Highway Use Tax
North Carolina generally applies a 3% Highway Use Tax. Dealer transactions use net retail value after a qualifying trade-in. Casual/private transfers use the DMV computer value schedule, so the official computer value is needed for a production-grade private-sale calculation.
Title and registration
The calculator includes the $66.75 title fee and $46.25 passenger registration baseline, plus current EV or plug-in-hybrid registration surcharge when selected. County vehicle property tax and some county registration taxes are separate.
Worked example
A $30,000 dealer purchase with a $5,000 qualifying trade-in uses a $25,000 HUT base. A private purchase instead needs the DMV computer value when that controls the taxable value.
