New York state guide
New York sales tax by purchaser location
New York applies 4% state sales/use tax plus county or city tax sourced to where the purchaser resides or the vehicle is principally garaged. A qualifying dealer trade-in reduces taxable receipts; manufacturer rebates remain taxable. Private sales use the purchaser locality and can require price substantiation.
Title and registration
The calculator includes the $50 title fee and uses the published passenger weight table. New standard plates are $25, but plate issuance/transfer is transaction-specific and is not automatically added. County vehicle-use tax, Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District fees and minimum-fee rules can change the final DMV amount, so registration is estimated.
Worked example
A $35,000 dealer purchase with a $5,000 qualifying trade-in uses a $30,000 taxable receipt before the combined state and local rate is applied.
