New Mexico Motor Vehicle Excise Tax
New Mexico uses a 4% Motor Vehicle Excise Tax rather than ordinary retail sales tax. Qualifying trade-in value and qualifying discounts/rebates reduce the price paid. For a non-dealer used sale, MVD compares the declared price with 80% of the official NADA trade-in/wholesale value.
Title and registration
The calculator includes the $5 title-only fee. Passenger registration depends on model year and weight and falls within published one- or two-year ranges, so the exact registration amount remains external/manual.
Worked example
A $30,000 dealer purchase with a $5,000 qualifying trade-in uses a $25,000 excise-tax base. A private sale may instead use 80% of official book value when that amount is higher.
