Rhode Island vehicle sales/use tax
Rhode Island dealer passenger-vehicle sales use 7% of purchase price minus trade-in and other allowances. For private sales, vehicles seven years old or less use the higher of sale price or NADA Clean Retail; ages 8-29 normally use sale price unless CPI rules apply; private vehicles 30 years or older again use book/CPI safeguards.
Title and registration
The calculator includes the $53.50 title/technology amount. Registration is weight- and proration-dependent, and 2026 adds annual BEV/PHEV/hybrid fees of $200/$100/$50 plus the current DOT surcharge, so the final registration total remains external/manual.
Worked example
For a five-year-old private vehicle sold for $15,000 with a $19,000 NADA Clean Retail value, Rhode Island tax uses $19,000.
