Texas motor vehicle sales/use tax
Texas applies 6.25% motor vehicle tax. Dealer transactions can deduct qualifying trade-in and rebate amounts. For a private used-vehicle sale, tax is generally based on the greater of purchase price or 80% of Standard Presumptive Value unless an allowed appraisal rule applies.
Title and registration
Texas title application is $28 or $33 depending on county, so title remains external. The calculator uses the $51.75 passenger registration baseline and adds the current $200 annual EV charge; county and inspection-related charges can increase the final amount.
Worked example
If a private used vehicle is bought for $12,000 and 80% of its Standard Presumptive Value is $16,000, the $16,000 value is the taxable base absent an applicable appraisal exception.
