Washington state guide
Washington vehicle taxes
Washington applies 6.5% state retail sales/use tax plus the destination/local rate and an additional 0.5% motor-vehicle tax. From July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027, the separate 8% luxury motor vehicle tax applies to selling price above $102,000. A qualifying like-kind trade-in reduces ordinary sales/use-tax value but is added back for the luxury threshold calculation.
Title and registration
The calculator includes the $15 title application fee. Tabs vary by vehicle weight and location, including RTA/TBD charges; EVs can also incur multiple electrification fees, so registration stays external.
Worked example
A $120,000 sale has an additional luxury-tax base of $18,000 during the current $102,000 deduction period, independent of the ordinary trade-in deduction.
