Tennessee state guide
Tennessee layered vehicle tax
Tennessee applies 7% state sales tax, the purchaser-locality rate to the first $1,600 of taxable value, and 2.75% state single-article tax to the next $1,600. A qualifying trade-in reduces taxable purchase price; generic rebate treatment is not assumed because the legal result depends on the incentive.
Title and registration
The calculator includes the $11 title and $26.50 standard registration baseline. In 2026, EVs add $200 and hybrid/PHEV vehicles add $100. County wheel tax and clerk/local charges remain estimated.
Worked example
For a $30,000 taxable amount, state tax applies to the full base, local tax applies only to the first $1,600, and the 2.75% single-article layer applies only to the next $1,600.
