Illinois state guide
Illinois dealer and private-party taxes differ
Illinois dealer sales use Retailers’ Occupation Tax at 6.25% state plus applicable local rates and allow qualified trade-in credit. Private-party purchases use the RUT-50 vehicle-use-tax schedule based on purchase price/fair market value and, under $15,000, vehicle age.
Title and registration
Standard passenger title is $165 and registration is $151; electric vehicles pay $251 annual registration. Some local governments also impose private-party vehicle use taxes.
Worked example
A private $12,000 vehicle does not use 6.25%; its state RUT-50 amount comes from the vehicle-age table.
