California state guide
California tax and trade-ins
California’s statewide base sales/use tax rate is 7.25%, with district taxes depending on the registration/use address. Trade-in allowance does not reduce the taxable selling price, and manufacturer/third-party rebates generally remain part of taxable selling price.
Title and registration
California registration depends on value, location and transaction details. The estimate includes base registration, CHP, VLF and TIF components but is not a substitute for the DMV calculator.
Worked example
If a vehicle sells for $35,000 and you trade a car worth $5,000, California tax is still based on the taxable selling price rather than a $30,000 trade difference.
Calculate your own scenario
Adjust the vehicle price, trade-in, financing terms, and other inputs above to estimate your own California vehicle purchase.
