Michigan vehicle sales tax
Michigan applies 6% sales/use tax. For 2026 dealer purchases, eligible trade-in value can reduce the tax base up to $12,000. Private transfers can be taxed on fair market value when it exceeds stated purchase price.
Title and registration
The calculator includes the $15 title fee. Registration for most newer passenger vehicles is based on original MSRP/base price and model year, so the final registration amount remains external/manual.

A 2026 dealer purchase with a $15,000 trade-in receives up to $12,000 of trade-in tax credit under the current cap.
